ICTP in Numbers

How many scientists have visited ICTP, and where do they come from? What do they research while they are here?

Since its inception, ICTP has received more than 110,000 visits from scientists representing 184 countries, more than half of those from developing countries.

In 1964, ICTP had 154 visitors from 40 countries. In 2008, it received 4,604 visitors from 136 countries. Forty-seven percent of the visitors came from developed countries while the remaining 53% came from developing countries, Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and transition countries.

ICTP Conferences and Workshops

In 2008, ICTP organised 48 training activities in the form of conferences and workshops, providing training to 3,200 course participants for an average length of stay of 13 days. In addition, 13 regional training activities were organised by ICTP and held in Africa, Asia and Latin America. An additional 1,735 scientists visited the centre for non-ICTP-related hosted conferences.

Statistics by Field

Research and training at ICTP focusses on five research areas:

  • Applied Physics (AP);
  • Condensed Matter and Statistical Physics (CMSP);
  • Earth System Physics (ESP);
  • High Energy, Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics (HECAP);
  • Mathematics (Math)
and a Multidisciplinary Lab (MLab) mainly focussed on interdisciplinary experimental activities.

ICTP Pre-PhD Educational Programmes

Diploma Programme: Aims to train students from developing countries in order to allow them to compete favourably for graduate studies in any centre of learning in the world. The programme consists of a rigorous, one-year, pre-doctoral course of study in areas including high-energy physics, condensed matter physics, mathematics, earth system physics, and basic physics.

During the academic year 2007-2008, 49 students participated in the programme including 12 young physicists from Sub-Saharan Africa who attended the new one-year Diploma Programme in Basic Physics.

ICTP/IAEA Sandwich Training Educational Programme (STEP): Offers fellowship opportunities to Ph.D. candidates from developing countries and provides scientific co-supervisors at ICTP or one of its collaborating institutions, for study in scientific fields covered by the IAEA Technical Cooperation Programmes and those falling in the scientific and technical competence of ICTP and its associated institutions.

In 2008, 32 fellows (10 female) participated in the programme for a total of 38 visits.

Joint Ph.D. Programme with University of Trieste: ICTP's Ph.D. Programme in Environmental Fluid Mechanics is a joint programme sponsored by ICTP, the University of Trieste, and three Italian scientific institutions in Trieste: Istituto di Scienze Marine, Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (ISMAR-CNR), Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografia e di Geofisica Sperimentale (OGS), and Osservatorio Meteorologico Regionale - Friuli Venezia Giulia (OSMER-FVG).

In 2008, four students were admitted.

ICTP/University of Trieste Laurea Magistralis: In physics, and in astrophysics and space physics.

In 2008, fellowships were awarded to seven students (from Armenia, Indonesia, Iran, Pakistan and Ethiopia). One student from Ethiopia has been supported by ICTP's TRIL for Africa programme. Three students (from Armenia, Indonesia, Iran) graduated in 2008.

ICTP Career Support Programmes

Associateship Scheme: Enables individual scientists to maintain long term, formal contacts with the stimulating and active scientific environment of ICTP.

In 2008, the number of Associates visiting ICTP was 218 for a total of 225 visits: 95 Regular Associates, 66 Senior Associates, 63 Junior Associates and 1 as Group Associate. Collectively, they spent 326.92 person-months, and produced 57 scientific papers.

Federation Arrangements: Contracts of scientific collaboration between ICTP and a scientific institution in a developing country. The arrangement allows the collaborating institute to send junior representatives to ICTP, on a cost-sharing basis, for an average stay of one month (but up to 6 months, depending on the location of the country).

In 2008, ICTP had a total of 111 Federation Arrangements. The total number of visits under the programme was 78.

Training and Research in Italian Laboratories (TRIL): Gives scientists from developing countries the opportunity to spend periods ranging from a few months to one year at Italian research laboratories in universities, governmental facilities and private institutions.

The total number of TRIL fellows in 2008 was 84, while 33 new grants and 34 extensions to existing grants were awarded.

ICTP-ELETTRA Users Programme: Offers access to the synchrotron radiation facility ELETTRA in Trieste to scientists from developing countries for experiments on its beamlines.

A total of 2,240 hours of beamtime were allocated in 2008, which indicates the overwhelming success of the programme. In 2008, ICTP supported 33 visits of participants from Brazil, China, Croatia, Hungary, India, Iran, Mexico, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Ukraine.

Synchrotron light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East (SESAME) Programme: Aims to build a synchrotron light source in Jordan, at Al Bal'qa University, and to operate it as an international laboratory for all scientists from the region. ICTP has a role in the training programmes of SESAME, by providing opportunities for Middle Eastern scientists and engineers to spend several months at existing facilities in Europe.

Educational Outreach

ICTP's Office of External Activities (OEA) provides research and training activities for physicists and mathematicians living and working in developing countries. Such support complements the training and research that ICTP provides at its campus in Trieste. Assistance is carried out through Affiliated Centres, support of Ph.D. courses and research projects (including the coordination of research networks), scientific meeting support, support for visiting scholars, and institutional collaborations.

In 2008, OEA supported 7 Affiliated Centres, 12 projects, 12 networks and 65 scientific meetings.

Female Scientists at ICTP

Female Scientists by Region

Over the past eight years, the number of women participating in ICTP activities has increased steadily and now stands at 20 percent. In 2008, 83 female scientists came from Africa, 225 from Asia, 133 from Latin America, 93 from transition countries, and 374 from developed regions.
