Research activities:

Research is carried out throughout the year in various fields of Mathematics, and each year a field of emphasis is chosen. A number of mathematicians, including several post-doctoral fellows, are invited for long- or short-term visits; in addition several Associates and Affiliates visit the Section. The ICTP Mathematics Section, in collaboration with SISSA, organizes a Joint Colloquium in Mathematics, which takes place at ICTP six or seven times per year.

The Mathematics Section consists of three mathematicians: Lothar Goettsche from Germany who works in Algebraic Geometry, Stefano Luzzatto from Italy who works in Dynamical Systems, Ramadas Ramakrishnan from India who works in Algebraic Geometry. The coordinator of the ICTP Diploma Programme in Mathematics is Lothar Goettsche.

The Mathematics section hosts every year approximately 140 visitors from different areas of Mathematics, among whom usually 12 post-docs. It organizes three schools in different topics each year gathering together about 400 scientists annually. It chooses 20-30 associates for ICTP every year. These associates have the possibility to visit ICTP three times during a period of 5 years. The section also runs a diploma course for M.Sc.'s from the least developed countries.

Outside ICTP the members of the Section participate to several scientific activities in Ghana, Nigeria, Mexico, India, China and Vietnam.

Special attention is given to the countries where the development of Mathematics is difficult.

Collaboration:

The Mathematics Section collaborates with the International Mathematical Union (IMU) in connection with its efforts for the promotion of Mathematics in developing countries.
