Scholarships and Award Opportunities
There are a number of international and national governmental
and non-governmental organisations that offer bursaries and awards
to support students from developing countries to pursue
post-graduate research degrees both within and outside their
country of origin.
These usually work in one of two ways. Either the funding
body awards the grants to specific universities to administer, and
in this case the candidate applies directly to the
university. The second method is that the candidate applies
to the awarding body to gain a personal fellowship with which they
can then approach a number of participating universities with
funding in place. Gaining such an award is particularly
helpful for study in countries whose national PhD funding scheme is
not open to overseas nationals, such as in the UK for example,
where research council funding is available for UK nations only (or
EU nationals already resident for more than 3 years in the
UK).
