Research Scientist - P3

To initiate, develop and coordinate competitive research and training programmes in the field of High energy physics related to experiments at the LHC and future accelerators. To work on theoretical aspects of LHC physics.

Research

  • To undertake front-line research in "Physics at LHC and Future High Energy Colliders".
  • To suggest, develop and realize scientific projects related to interpretation of results from the LHC and other accelerator experiments; to study discovery potential of future colliders; to lead a research team composed of post-doctoral fellows and visitors, with particular emphasis on visitors from developing countries
  • To establish and maintain scientific contacts with CERN and other accelerator centers, to
    participate in working group and committees related to collider experiments; to act as a liaison between the High Energy group and other groups around the world, where front-line research is conducted in his/her areas of expertise
  • To establish wide cooperation with scientists from developing countries; to identify the scientific needs of developing countries in his/her field of expertise, and to formulate the appropriate recommendations for incorporation within ICTP's programmes
  • To report on results of the research at major international meetings


Management

  • To assist the Supervisor in the organization of ICTP scientific meetings as well as training
    programmes in the field of his/her competence
  • To assist the Supervisor in reviewing applications and make selection of post-doctoral fellows,
    visitors and associates; to assist visitors during their stay in the Centre
  • Whenever needed and requested to take part in various committees set up by the Director to ensure the smooth functioning of ICTP

Teaching

  • To lecture in the High Energy Diploma and other programmes
  • To supervise the Diploma thesis
  • To participate in joint PhD programmes with Italian institutions

Profile

  • Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral level in physics, with speciality in High Energy.
  • 4 to 7 years of post-doctoral research experience, of which preferably 2 years acquired at the international level.
  • Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English.
  • An appropriate attitude towards the international and multicultural characteristics involved in the assignment.

Conditions of employment

ICTP is a world-class institution focused on research in basic sciences with the responsibility for the promotion, dissemination and support of science, especially in developing countries. It operates under the aegis of UNESCO and IAEA. This is an extra-budgetary position of a continuing nature but the duration of the appointment will be subject to the availability of funds. UNESCO's salaries are calculated in US Dollars. They consist of a basic salary and a post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living changes in a particular duty station and exchange rates. For this post, the annual remuneration will start at US$85,482 if there are no dependants and at US$91,578 if there are dependants, and is exempt from income tax. There is an attractive benefits package, which includes 30 days of annual vacation, home travel, education grant for dependent children, pension plan and medical insurance. The initial appointment, which is for 2 years, includes a probationary period of 12 months, and is renewable, subject to satisfactory service.
