From geometry to dynamical systems

The Mathematics section is oriented towards geometry and dynamical systems.

The section consists of four mathematicians: Claudio Arezzo from Italy (Differential geometry), Lothar Goettsche from Germany (Algebraic Geometry), Stefano Luzzatto from Italy (Dynamical Systems), and Ramadas Ramakrishnan from India (Algebraic Geometry).

Claudio Arezzo studies the geometry of complex algebraic varieties using techniques from analysis and differential geometry. Lothar Göttsche and Ramadas Ramakrishnan are interested in moduli spaces in algebraic geometry and interactions with theoretical physics.

Stefano Luzzatto studies dynamical systems and is particularly concerned with the geometric and statistical properties of chaotic systems as well as the use of rigorous use of numerical techniques to study them.

The Section has played an important role in fostering mathematics research and higher education in developing countries. It has always made an effort to promote diversity, while at the same time striving to maintain a vibrant research community.

Math in numbers

In 2010, the Math research group organised 5 training courses. The group provided 207 months of training to 479 course participants for an average length of stay of 13 days. They were lectured by 119 experts in the field.
